I am continuing to read books by some of my internet social media friends, and they’re always a delight! Today, I just finished The Unfinished Business (2026), by Stephanie Campisi. https://skullsinthestars.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/image.png Some time ago, Stephanie sent me an electronic uncorrected proof to read, but here I’ve read (and purchased) the published version! If ghosts exist, why do they stick around? They must have some business that remains to be settled and can’t rest until they do. That is the premise of The Unfinished Business, a lighthearted, funny and fast-paced ride through shenanigans in both life and the afterlife. High schooler Dari Glenn has enough to worry about in her own life, like school, helping her mom open a new patisserie, and seeing ghosts that almost nobody else can see. But when Maude, proprietor of The Unfinished Business, meets an untimely end, Maude’s spirit drafts Dari into her life’s work: figuring out what is keeping ghosts from moving on from this life and helping put them to rest. But every spirit is different, and the tasks needed to complete their business range from almost trivial to nearly impossible. And Maude has always dreamed of finishing the Holy Grail of projects: the Woolex Factory, where hundreds of people died in a fire. But ghosts are not the only ones who have outstanding issues to work through, as Dari herself knows well… The Unfinished Business is a book written for young adults but it is enjoyable for people of any age. It sets up a lively and fun cast of characters — and spirits — and ties them all together with a charming narrative that is filled with entertaining twists and turns. I was especially enamored with its wit: the book is clever and funny and the humor never feels forced. The world building is exceptional in the book as well, as we learn a lot about the town and its history though the travails of its spiritual inhabitants. By the end, I was rooting for all of them to get the end they deserved. The Unfinished Business is labeled “Book 1,” suggesting that we could get more adventures with Dari in the future. I will note that this book wraps itself up very well and is complete all by itself, though it clearly leaves open the possibility of more spectral adventures in the future. I will certainly read more of them if they come to pass! The Unfinished Business was a joy to read and recommended for anyone who would enjoy a lighthearted ghostly tale.
