Duringa Washington Nationals baseball game (https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7287471/2026/05/17/nationals-white-nationalist-sign-ban/)on May 17, 2026, three peopleunfurled a large banner (https://www.mlb.com/news/nationals-investigating-individuals-banner)from the upper deck of Nationals Park displaying a link to a white nationalist website.
The website, warning of the replacement of whites by people of color, called forthe deportation of 100 million people (https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7287471/2026/05/17/nationals-white-nationalist-sign-ban/)from the United States.
The disturbing incident reflects the broaderascendance of the “great replacement theory (https://theconversation.com/what-is-the-great-replacement-theory-a-scholar-of-race-relations-explains-224835),” the xenophobic conspiracy theory asserting that shadowy elites are embracing permissive immigration policies to replace native-born white Americans with immigrants of color.
Prominent Republicans (https://www.mediamatters.org/new-york-times/trump-pushed-replacement-theory-during-debate-mainstream-media-fact-checks-sanitized), includingPresident Donald Trump (https://www.npr.org/2024/09/13/g-s1-22583/trump-great-replacement-conspiracy-theory),Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (https://sg.news.yahoo.com/trump-mike-johnson-promote-great-222624801.html)andconservative podcaster Tucker Carlson (https://www.npr.org/2023/04/25/1171800317/how-tucker-carlsons-extremist-narratives-shaped-fox-news-and-conservative-politi), have echoed ideas associated with the great replacement theory. Andconservative media outlets (https://www.npr.org/2023/04/25/1171800317/how-tucker-carlsons-extremist-narratives-shaped-fox-news-and-conservative-politi), such asFox News (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/15/us/replacement-theory-shooting-tucker-carlson.html), have disseminated them to millions of viewers.
But are the xenophobic ideas recently expressed at Nationals Park limited to a small number of extremists, or are they also endorsed by the broader public? If the latter, how do political and media elites contribute to their spread?
To answer these questions, our team has conducted severalnationally representative surveys (https://www.umass.edu/political-science/umass-amherst-poll)that ask Americans about their support for key tenets of the great replacement theory.
New immigrants as a threat
We consistently found thata substantial minority of Americans (https://www.umass.edu/political-science/about/reports/2026-4)agree with the sentiment that new immigrants threaten the political, cultural and economic power of white Americans. In our latest poll of 1,000 Americans fielded in March 2026, 36% agreed with the statement: “Native-born Americans are losing their economic, political, and cultural influence in this country because of the growing population of immigrants.”
A notable number of Americans – 26% – also believed political elites are trying to “replace” the existing white population, agreeing with the statement: “There are people who secretly work to make sure immigrants will eventually replace real Americans.”
Support for these beliefs is concentrated most heavily among white Americans, Republicans, conservatives and self-identifying members of Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again movement. Indeed, more than 3 in 4 members of the MAGA movement and close to 6 in 10 Republicans agreed with the statement: “Immigrants invade and colonize the United States.”
But what explains this spread of the great replacement theory?
Inour newly published, peer-reviewed study (https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/16579947898070845A02E0B7FA80EF2B/S1049096525101856a.pdf/follow-the-fox-elite-influence-and-white-support-for-the-great-replacement-theory.pdf), we used nationally representative panel survey data thattracked over 500 white Americans over time (https://www.russellsage.org/research/grants/understanding-voices-diverse-electorate-through-american-multiracial-panel-study)to attempt to answer this question.
We found that white Americans who identified as Republican, who are conservatives and who havenegative views of people from other racial backgrounds (https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/ps-political-science-and-politics/article/fear-institutionalized-racism-and-empathy-the-underlying-dimensions-of-whites-racial-attitudes/F6205AFDA74F11AAAA518DA240AC7995)are all more likely to express support for key tenets of the great replacement theory. Moreover, we uncovered clear evidence that white Americans who watch Fox News are also more likely to agree with the conspiracy theory.
Given the popularity of Fox News, we believe this latter point deserved further investigation. As detailed in our paper, while 39% of all white Americans agree that immigrants invade and colonize the U.S., 61% of white Americans who watch Fox News agree with this view. Even when taking into account partisan identification, ideology, racial attitudes and demographic characteristics, Fox News viewership remains significantly associated with more support for the great replacement theory.
Additionally, because we tracked white Americans over time, we could observe changes in their support for the conspiracy theory in response to variations in their viewership of Fox News. Simply put, the more Fox News programming that a white American watches, the more likely they are to adopt the conspiracy theory.
Links to political violence
Our research builds on decades of work showing that public opinion is strongly influenced by media consumption. Recent scholarship, in particular, highlights the influence of Fox News on public opinion. It shows how exposure to Fox News leads Americans to express more conservative attitudes about theCOVID-19 pandemic (https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/426C07EADC0D1E49D4AD26233C4CB9B8/S1047198723000219a.pdf/div-class-title-the-effect-of-fox-news-on-health-behavior-during-covid-19-div.pdf),immigration policies (https://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/article/view/12402)andcriminal justice issues (https://doi.org/10.1093/ej/uead108).
Giventhe attention that Fox News hosts (https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/list-fox-hosts-and-personalities-who-have-pushed-great-replacement-theory), elected officials and pundits dedicate to the great replacement theory, our results suggest that this coverage has indeed influenced the views of white Americans. The great replacement theory is no longer purely on the fringes of society.
In our view, this is troubling, not only because the conspiracy theory treats immigration as an existential issue — where the stakes are framed as the very preservation of one’s self and country — but also because the theory is also linked tonumerous instances of political violence (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/buffalo-supermarket-shooting-suspect-posted-apparent-manifesto-repeate-rcna28889)directed at people of color and religious minorities.
As America approaches its 250th birthday, the nation will no doubt continue to grapple with the topic of immigration, race and what it means to be an American.
While there’s plenty of room for disagreement over immigration policy, conspiracy theories make it much harder to find common ground or craft political compromises. What we’ve found is that when prominent media embrace conspiracy theorizing, increased public endorsement of conspiracies will follow.

False conspiracies according to whom?
That covid was developed in a lab? (it was) That Biden was senile, it was very obvious to even casual observers (meaning the public) and that a wide swath (very liberal) MSM covered it up? (He was, and they did).
Everyone who agrees with me is good, everyone who disagrees is bad, more at 11

Prove it.

Sure, Biden was not fit for office in his last term.
But if conservatives were so mad about that, how come none of you are commenting on Trump’s obvious mental degradation and the complete lack of commentary on it from right-wing media?
To put it another way, why are you such fucking hypocrites?

Re: Re: Re:

Which ones? Be specific.
It’s partly that, but mostly that you all LIED about it.
Let’s say that “we” did. There’s nothing you can do about it now—but you can admit that the current president, who is 80 years old and in clearly failing health while bragging about “acing” tests he thinks are intelligence tests but are actually tests for dementia, is either already unfit for office or closing in on being unfit.
you are making shit up
He’s bragged about “acing” cognitive tests that are actually dementia screenings, which people wouldn’t normally undergo unless they’re showing signs of dementia. He tries to claim his inability to hold and speak in coherent thoughts for more than thirty seconds before pivoting to something else entirely is actually him doing some shit he calls a “weave”. He’s been caught on tape dozing off during meetings. He was once in the middle of talking to reporters in the Oval Office before he stood up and looked out a window for seemingly no reason at all.
You can say all you want about Biden. Hell, I’ll even join you—that centrist needledick should’ve gotten out of the race way earlier than he did, and he was only ever meant to be a “cleanup” president who was going to get the country back on track after Trump. But if you’re unwilling to criticize Trump for anything substantive, you’re suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, because being unwilling to criticize someone for their obvious failings—and praising their vices as virtues while condemning genuine virtues as vices—is a form of derangement bordering on a cult-like religious obsession. If I can criticize Biden for his actual failings, why can’t you criticize Trump for anything more substantive than his shitty taste in aesthetics?

Re: Re: Re:

I actually have read them and know what they say which you don’t because you just repeat idiocy from other idiots since you lack the capacity for any kind of original thought, or reading comprehension for that matter.
For example, the CIA report said “COVID-19 most likely originated from a laboratory” while also saying they had a low confidence in that conclusion. CIA commented on the report saying that they “continues to assess that both research-related and natural origin scenarios of the COVID-19 pandemic remain plausible“.
So when you confidently say COVID-19 was developed in a lab, why haven’t you presented that evidence to the intelligence community? You have evidence, right? You aren’t just repeating stupid shit from some conspiracy nut, right?
Not only are you dumber than a rock, you are also proud of it. Someone should explain in small words what “low confidence” and “likely” actually means to you.

I guess it’s good to have all this empirically confirmed but I can’t say I find it all that surprising. Were we expecting there to be a big hive of nativist paranoia among recent non-white immigrants or something? Obviously this is a right-wing media phenomenon, they’ve been pumping this stuff for years and years.

Re:

The funny thing is, I read a story yesterday about conservative Muslims in Texas who went looking for a place in the GOP (https://www.texastribune.org/2026/06/15/texas-republican-party-convention-muslims-sharia-law/) and ended up being told to GTFO of both the convention and the country (and told to convert to Christianity). It’s darkly hilarious that the GOP could probably have more allies in minority demographic groups if the party wasn’t so dedicated to holding onto its various bigotries.

There’s been some debate (including on Techdirt; although that tends to be more about more techy media like social media) on how much of it is causally changing people’s beliefs, rather than just people choosing to watch something like Fox to reaffirm their existing beliefs. And if it is causal, how big the effect was

Re: Re:

It’s likely both. They get into a positive feedback loop where they hear stuff that affirms their beliefs, so they keep listening and start thinking more about shit they’re fed that they never thought of before, including entire mythologies about fake conspiracies and being told that everyone else is evil, and those newer beliefs are reaffirmed consistently. Once they’re stuck in it, they reject anything that doesn’t jibe with their half-remembered, never-cited gut feeling bullshit.

It’s not about surprising you. It’s about actually getting the data to back up those feelings.
Your feelings are important too, obv! Just not when it comes to investigating the spread of misinformation.

Re: Re: Re:

The irony is that some small towns operate similarly to the “socialist agenda” conservatives pretend to fear (e.g., they have community programs to take care of the less fortunate, people barter when they can’t pay). When the children in these towns “turn liberal” after moving to big cities, the parents never realize how their children were unconsciously “leaning left” well before escaping.

They’re happy to help. But only if they get to control who can and who can’t get that help. Them not getting to control the aid is- or “was”- both why the gov safety net is better and also why they hate it so much.

Re: Re: Re:3

That’s kind of my point, though. The kids are taught those values, even if the “teaching” is imperfect. Once they move out and encounter more people, the chances that they’ll apply those values more generally often go up. I’m not saying it’s a foolproof thing—of course you’re going to see assholes who hold onto their parents’ bigotries and only apply those values to “the right people”. But like I said, when those kids who “turn left” do it so suddenly, it’s more likely that they didn’t so much “turn left” as they did apply those “small-town values” to a broader set of people and figure out that cooperation is how human society at large is supposed to work.

Their question 1: “Immigrants invade and colonize the United States” is true. Beginning in 1620 immigrants invaded Massachusetts and eventually formed it into a colony.
